I told you already about Andy Mulumba and the difficult and circuitous route he took to the NFL. Few players in the NFL could match Mulumba's story, except for maybe safety Jean Fanor.
Fanor spent the first ten years of his life in Haiti, moving to Miami with his family to escape the violence in his home town. Fanor was robbed every day on the way to school, and since he couldn't outrun the robbers, he had to learn how to fight to keep whatever little money he had.
After playing safety at the lightly-regarded Bethune Cookman University, Fanor didn't get much attention from the NFL. He signed with the Chiefs in 2012, but was cut before the start of the regular season.
Undeterred, Fanor signed with the Tampa Bay Storm in the Arena Football league, where he starred for two years. When I say starred, I don't mean that he was just a good arena football player. I mean he dominated his competition. Take a look at this video.
Those two excellent years earned him a tryout with the Packers in 2014, and although he wasn't signed on the spot, Fanor was offered a contract in Green Bay a month later.
Despite the offer, Fanor is hardly guaranteed a roster spot this year. There are at least four, maybe five safeties ahead of him on the depth chart, depending on how you count, and the opportunities for a guy like Fanor are few and far between. Still, if anybody is ready to fight, you'd think it would have to be Jean Fanor.
